WHAT REGULATION TO BOOST THE GROWTH OF THE EUROPEAN ORGANIC SECTOR?

Regulation 2092/91 has introduced the first rules on organic production in the European Community and has accompanied the first pioneering years of growth from a small niche to a promising market segment. Regulation 834/2007 has supported the sector in the following ten years, during which, despite the economic crisis, organic has offered an increasingly credible and solid alternative to a conventional agriculture system suffering from globalisation and a slow adaptation to changes in consumption paradigms. Today, the organic sector represents more than 10% of agricultural land in many Countries; in some it is considered an activity of national interest, supplying public goods and employing around two million people in the European Union. The new regulation, after its arduous genesis, has the task to sustain the third phase, during which, in full alignment with the Common Agricultural Policy, the growth rate of organic production will speed up to become the prevailing agricultural method. Representatives from leading European organisations of the sector will discuss this vision and the legislative framework for its fulfilment with the Italian Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry Policies.
